Rewriting Humanism:
Arca, Posthumanism, and Gender Acceleration
by Jay Dye
Introduction

Arca's hand-painted logo used to promote her album KiCk i
Arca is a trans producer and electronic musician who engages with posthumanist ideas in her music and visuals. Through her lyrics, album art, and music videos, she rewrites humanism by deconstructing binaries between male and female, human and nonhuman, and self and other, in order to construct a space of posthuman expression for her fans.
My analysis chiefly examines 2 cultural artifacts: Arca's song "Nonbinary" and the cover for her album KiCk i (which "Nonbinary" is on). I also engage with the discourse around gender accelerationism, or g/acc, a posthuman conception of gender which aims to de(con)struct the gender binary by encouraging rebellion against the gender binary. Arca accelerates gender through her art and gender expression, fighting against the humanist reduction of traditional gender roles through promotion of nonbinary expression.
